![]() ![]() The Americans knew that if the town of Bastogne fell, so would many other towns, along with taking many American lives. The Screaming Eagles were holding out against artillery, tanks, and infantry, but with heavy causalities. They had been trying to capture the town for about a week, but to no avail. The 2nd Panzer Division was the main division tasked with capturing Bastogne. Bastogne sat at an important cross-roads that stretched all the way to Antwerp, Hitler's main objective in the Battle of the Bulge. They had orders to hold the town at all costs. The "Screaming Eagles", as the 101st was called, had been holding that town since the beginning of the Bulge. Their mission: to relieve the tired and run-down defenders of the town Bastogne, held by the American 101st Airborne Division.
